Halton residents in eligible households who pay their council tax bill by direct debit are to be the first to receive a £150 rebate awarded by the Government to help with the cost of living.

The one-time payment is to be given to people living in Band A to D properties and those on low incomes in Bands E to H.

Halton Borough Council said the rebate does not need to be repaid.

Households who pay their council tax by direct debit will receive the money from April, while other households will be invited to make a claim.

The Government is awarding the money as energy prices surge alongside soaring demand as countries emerge from Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

A Halton Council spokesman said the price of gas has quadrupled in the last year alone, and that although the problem is global, it is being felt by millions of UK households.

Halton spans the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, Cheshire, and some surrounding neighbourhoods.

Cllr Mark Dennett (corporate services) said: "Households in council tax bands A-D will receive the £150 council tax rebate.

"But it will be easier to refund people who pay by direct debit so they will get the money first."

Anyone unsure of their council tax band can check at gov.uk/council-tax-bands or call Halton Council on 0151 511 7771, which is also the number to call to set up a direct debit.

Councils are also to receive £144m to provide support to vulnerable households who do not qualify for the £150 council tax rebate.

Details will follow on how to claim.
